Scott Warren Re-Trial
Scott Warren is a 37-year old geography teacher who was charged with two felonies - harboring and conspiracy - for helping two undocumented migrants from Central America through the organization No More Deaths. He faced 20 years in prison. His “crime” of giving water and shelter to two individuals in need became a benchmark for whether or not humanitarian aide is a punishable offense. The case, which received national coverage, ended in a hung jury in June, and was re-tried last week. Today, November 20th, he was acquitted of all charges. This is a big day for humanity, as it course-corrects the confusion our nation has been in around the Golden Rule - “do unto others…”
The case echoes the scene in DUSTWUN where Agent Clark lets Kenny go after Marta is captured (spoiler alert!). We don’t get into the repercussions for either of them, but under the present rule of law, Kenny would face prison and Agent Clark would be fired, fined, and barred from service for not turning Kenny in.
This interview with Brit Hessler from No More Deaths was shot the first day of the re-trial - November 12 - in front of the courthouse in Tucson.
